Industries such as electronics, laboratory research, pharmaceuticals, fine chemicals, and battery manufacturing are demanding increasingly higher purity levels for process water. Standard single-stage reverse osmosis (RO) systems often yield water with resistivity levels insufficient for high-precision manufacturing processes. Qingzhou Foren Water Treatment Equipment Co., Ltd. has introduced an RO EDI plant utilizing a combined RO and EDI process. This system eliminates the need for extensive acid-base regeneration, consistently produces high-purity ultrapure water, and is suitable for industrial applications with stringent water quality requirements.
The RO EDI plant features a 304 stainless steel frame, piping, and tank construction, utilizing an integrated skid-mounted design. The system includes fully automatic pre-treatment tanks (activated carbon and resin filtration) and a two-stage RO main unit, with an integrated EDI membrane stack module at the discharge end. The entire assembly is mounted on a single frame, offering a compact footprint that facilitates transport, on-site installation, and commissioning-making it ideal for facilities with limited space.

Process Breakdown of the RO EDI Plant
✅ Pre-treatment Unit (Automatic Pre-filtration)
Equipped with fully automatic control valves, this unit performs activated carbon filtration and softening resin filtration. It captures sediment, rust, suspended solids, and residual chlorine from the raw water while reducing hardness. This protects downstream RO membrane elements by preventing scaling and oxidative damage, stabilizing feed water quality, and reducing maintenance frequency. The tanks are constructed from mirror-finish stainless steel, ensuring corrosion resistance and a long service life.
✅ Two-Stage Reverse Osmosis (RO) for Advanced Desalination
The first RO stage removes the majority of salts, colloids, and organic matter. The permeate from the first stage then enters the second RO stage for further desalination, significantly lowering ion content. The system incorporates high-pressure stainless steel pumps, precision pressure gauges, and flow monitoring instruments, all managed by a centralized electrical control cabinet that allows for real-time monitoring of feed pressure and permeate flow. This two-stage RO process pre-purifies the water to meet the feed requirements of the downstream EDI unit, ensuring stable operation of the EDI module.
✅ EDI Continuous Electrodeionization (Ultrapure Water Polishing)
The EDI module is the core component for ultrapure water production. It continuously removes trace residual ions from the water without requiring chemical regeneration (acids or alkalis), yielding ultrapure water with stable resistivity. Compared to traditional mixed-bed processes, it eliminates acidic and alkaline wastewater discharge, making it more eco-friendly. It offers simple operation, reducing labor requirements and hazardous waste disposal costs. The equipment features an independent electrical control cabinet and module-level overload protection, ensuring safe and reliable operation.

Key Equipment Features
1. Integrated Skid-Mounted Design
The entire unit is pre-assembled at the factory, including all piping, valves, and instrumentation. Upon delivery to the customer's site, it is ready for operation simply by connecting water and power; this significantly shortens the construction period and lowers on-site installation costs. As shown in the image, the pretreatment tanks, two-stage RO main unit, EDI unit, and dual electrical control cabinets are arranged systematically with organized piping layouts, facilitating daily inspections and maintenance.
2. All-Stainless Steel Construction (Corrosion-Resistant & Hygienic)
The main frame, piping, and filter tanks in contact with water are constructed from 304 stainless steel with a polished finish. This material resists rust and microbial growth, meeting the water quality standards of the chemical, food, and pharmaceutical industries. The equipment boasts a clean appearance and ensures long-term operational stability.
3. Intelligent Control & Visualized Operation
The RO EDI plant features two independent electrical control cabinets integrating indicator lights, buttons, and online instrumentation to monitor pressure, flow rate, and water quality in real-time. It includes high/low-pressure protection and automatic shutdown functions for low-water or over-pressure conditions, preventing damage to pumps and membrane elements while allowing even novice operators to use the system easily.
4. Low Operating Costs & Eco-Friendly
The EDI process eliminates the need for traditional mixed-bed acid/alkali regeneration, thereby avoiding acidic/alkaline wastewater generation and reducing costs associated with chemical procurement and waste disposal. The system offers efficient energy consumption and is ideally suited for the continuous water production needs of small and medium-sized factories.
