Nanofiltration water system is used in water treatment, food industry, pharmaceutical industry, zero discharge, and greywater reuse.
Similar to RO and UF systems, the NF system differs from UF in that it can recover part of the feed water. Nanofiltration system is a highly efficient membrane separation technology device with a polymer membrane with a pore size between that of ultrafiltration and reverse osmosis. It utilizes the selective permeability of nanofiltration membranes to achieve the retention and separation of specific ions in water. This separation process is based on size exclusion and charge action, which gives nanofiltration equipment a high efficiency and broad application prospects.

In water treatment, NF technology bridges the gap between UF and RO membranes. And compared to reverse osmosis membrane system, nanofiltration membrane system allow more salt to pass through. Sometimes NF membrane is called low-rejection RO membrane or low-pore-size RO membrane. Furthermore, nanofiltration system can produce the same output of product with only 50% - 70% of the pressure required for a reverse osmosis water treatment system.
Sometimes, NF membrane is also called "softening" membrane, as its hardness rejection can usually remain above 90% even if the desalination rate is only 80% or lower.
