Reverse Osmosis (RO) systems are designed to purify water by removing up to 99% of total dissolved solids (TDS) from feed water. A single-stage RO system produces both product water (permeate) and concentrate (reject stream) simultaneously during operation. A DPRO system refers to a configuration where the concentrate or reject stream from the first stage is fed into a second RO unit, enabling efficient water recovery, improving utilization rate and reducing water consumption.
Working principle of Double Pass Reverse Osmosis System:
A double pass reverse osmosis system consists of two reverse osmosis systems: a primary reverse osmosis system and a secondary reverse osmosis system.
The volumetric flow rate of the primary reverse osmosis system is greater than that of the secondary reverse osmosis system. A buffer tank is installed between the two systems to store the permeate or concentrate produced by the primary reverse osmosis system and send it to the secondary reverse osmosis system for further filtration.
If the two-stage reverse osmosis system is used for water recycling, pretreatment is required in both the primary and secondary reverse osmosis systems because the concentrate from the primary reverse osmosis system should be close to its saturation point.
If the permeate from the primary reverse osmosis system is used directly in the secondary reverse osmosis system, pretreatment of the primary reverse osmosis system may be necessary.
Double pass RO systems help address this challenge by minimizing concentrate generation. Some manufacturers go a step further with zero liquid discharge schemes, using direct brine generators (DPROs), evaporators, or brine concentrators to separate salts from pure water in the final treatment stage, and salt crystallizers in the final stage.
